Marching to Remember
During the several days drive from my home in Minnesota to my primary fieldwork base in New York, I stopped for an evening's rest in Cleveland, Ohio. Police cars and barricades lined the city's streets - remnants of the day's protests in response to the recent acquittal of Michael Brelo, a white police officer involved in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black couple.
Grasping at Rotten Straws
This summer, I went back to my hometown of Smederevo, a small town in Serbia 40 kilometres away from the capital city of Belgrade, in order to explore the everyday lives of Serbian youth and the challenges that they face due to decades of political, social and economic uncertainty.
“I am Mexico”
For two months this summer, I went back to Mexico City for my fieldwork. Back to the place which already fascinated me three years ago. Now, when writing this, I am back again in Manchester and will put together some of my notes to reflect on my lived experiences.
Observational vs Collaborative filmmaking
For the past month and a half all I have been doing is thinking about my film; what shots will work, what questions I should answer, how should I frame my subjects. I met up with the people who will participate in my film a few times over this past month in order to get to know them.
Duende. First Fieldnotes
Almost two months ago, I started a project trying to represent what some people understood to be the idea of Duende, a term used in Spanish Flamenco which seems to represent the capacity it has to fascinate and move people all around the world.
The Right Man for the Job
This summer, I returned to my hometown for fieldwork in a Chinese hospital. The hospital accepted me as an "informal trainee", which means I could observe all the healing and teaching activities taking place.
Day 12 around Teulada
Day 12 around Teulada, extreme south of Sardinia, Italy. Here, I am closer to Africa than Europe. You can tell from the birds that I have never seen wild before in my country, like hummingbirds, flamingos and storks. The heat is constant and at lunchtime the earth burns.
