A Moment White, Then Melts Forever.

“A Moment White, Then Melts Forever” is a line from a poem by the famous Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns. In this context, the title of the film symbolises the wool collected from sheep sheared by crofters, representing the crofting practices on the Isle of Harris. However, these practices are slowly disappearing due to various socio-economic factors, such as an ageing population and economic changes. This ethnographic film explores the lives of crofters on the Isle of Harris, located in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It examines the intricate relationships between crofters and their sheep, highlighting how these bonds have been shaped by the crofters’ experiences in sheep farming. Using methods such as participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and sensory media research, the film poignantly portrays the factors contributing to the decline of crofting on Harris. It also showcases various crofting practices involved in sheep care while highlighting the experiences of crofters from different generations.
