Isle of Mist
A sample of the work my students are producing for Beyond Observational Cinema, the course I teach in the MA in Visual Anthropology. Siôn Marshall-Waters and Jan-Holger Hennies went to the Scottish island of Skye and talked to some of its inhabitants asking them to remember the past and tell stories about the place where they live.
Piccadilly Gardens Visual Essay
Part of the documentary course Beyond Observational Cinema, which I teach in the second semester of the MA in Visual Anthropology, is a lecture on essay films. Students can then choose this form, among many others, for their assessed film at the end of the course. Here is an example from the 2015 course, made by Chao Chang and Sebastian Sommer.
On Being Self-Reflexive
The beginning of July marks the end of the second term at Austrian universities, which means that the main part of my fieldwork has already ended. Up until now I attended twelve events organised by Christian student societies (several of them took a whole weekend) and interviewed 13 participants. After an intense period in the field, which isn't entirely over yet, it is time for a first recap.
Grasping at Rotten Straws
This summer, I went back to my hometown of Smederevo, a small town in Serbia 40 kilometres away from the capital city of Belgrade, in order to explore the everyday lives of Serbian youth and the challenges that they face due to decades of political, social and economic uncertainty.
Observational vs Collaborative filmmaking
For the past month and a half all I have been doing is thinking about my film; what shots will work, what questions I should answer, how should I frame my subjects. I met up with the people who will participate in my film a few times over this past month in order to get to know them.
Duende. First Fieldnotes
Almost two months ago, I started a project trying to represent what some people understood to be the idea of Duende, a term used in Spanish Flamenco which seems to represent the capacity it has to fascinate and move people all around the world.
Day 12 around Teulada
Day 12 around Teulada, extreme south of Sardinia, Italy. Here, I am closer to Africa than Europe. You can tell from the birds that I have never seen wild before in my country, like hummingbirds, flamingos and storks. The heat is constant and at lunchtime the earth burns.
Screening of Tender kisses are hard to find
Inês Ponte’s film Tender Kisses are Hard to Find has been selected for the official programme of the Kratovo Ethnographic Film Festival. The festival will take place from 2 to 4 October in Skopje, Macedonia.
